Office Anesthesia Evaluations

In 2004, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons changed it's bylaws to require a current office anesthesia evaluation in order to maintain membership in AAOMS.  The Texas Society has implemented the same change to our Bylaws to reflect the membership requirements of AAOMS.  Additionally, AAOMS has charged the Texas Society with the responsibility of evaluating and maintaining office anesthesia certification for all members.  The due date established by AAOMS for completing membership evaluations is the Fall of 2009.

The monitored evaluation process began in December 2004 for the Texas Society membership.  Since December 2004, the Texas Society has successfully completed 284 Office Anesthesia Evaluations for a total of 78% of the membership roster in the first 3 years of the mandatory process.

Members who attend the Southwest Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons' Annual Meeting in the Spring of each year will have an opportunity to obtain the most recent updates applicable for the emergency management section of the evaluation through attendance at the Office Anesthesia Evaluation course to be presented at the next three meetings.

Currently, we are compiling the list of members for scheduled evaluations in the Spring of 2010.  Should you wish to be included in this list, please contact the Executive Director, Kelly Shy (kellyannshy@alamoOMS.com).

The most controversial issue surrounding the evaluation process is that of ACLS certification.  Although the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners will issue licensure and Anesthesia Permits if a surgeon has proof of successfully completing either the ACLS course or a parenteral anesthesia course, AAOMS only recognizes ACLS certification as sufficient documentation of training for this evaluation process.

Each surgeon is required to maintain an office anesthesia evaluation certificate (valid for five years from the date of evaluation).  We encourage group practices to obtain certification of all respective surgeons at the same time to ensure efficiency and timeliness of the evaluation process.  The fee for the Office Anesthesia Evaluation process is $75.00 per surgeon and is used for reimbursement of travel expenses for the approved evaluators.
